MICR Supplies FAQ | Tinta Industries
Understanding MICR
What is MICR toner and why is it required for check printing?
MICR toner contains magnetic iron oxide particles that allow banks and financial institutions to read and process checks using high-speed scanning equipment. Regular toner does not contain these magnetic particles, so checks printed with standard toner will be rejected by banks. If your business prints checks, you must use MICR toner cartridges to ensure compliance with banking standards.
What is the difference between MICR toner and regular toner?
MICR toner is formulated with magnetic iron oxide particles that produce characters readable by bank check-processing equipment. Regular toner produces visually identical text, but lacks the magnetic properties required for automated check processing. Using regular toner for check printing will result in bank rejections and potential fraud liability.
Do MICR cartridges meet ANSI and banking standards?
Yes. Tinta Industries’ MICR cartridges are formulated to meet ANSI X9.27 specifications for magnetic signal strength, the standard required by U.S. banks and credit unions for automated check processing. Our cartridges are also compatible with Federal Reserve and Canadian Payments Association requirements.
Can I use MICR toner for regular printing?
Technically yes — MICR toner produces visually clean black text on plain documents. However, MICR toner is significantly more expensive than standard toner, so it’s not cost-effective for everyday printing. Most businesses dedicate one printer to check printing with MICR toner and use a separate printer for regular documents.
Choosing the Right Product
What MICR toner cartridges does Tinta Industries carry?
We carry a comprehensive selection of MICR toner cartridges for HP, Lexmark, and Troy printers. Our most popular models include the HP 148A/148X, HP 58A/58X, HP 26A/26X, HP 80A/80X, HP 89A/89X, and HP 37A/37X MICR cartridges. We also carry MICR ink cartridges for HP inkjet printers (HP 67, 63, 65, 64, 962 MICR).
Are Tinta’s MICR cartridges compatible with my printer?
Tinta’s MICR cartridges are direct replacements for HP, Lexmark, and Troy printers — they install and operate exactly like the OEM cartridges your printer was designed for. If you can use a standard HP 26A in your printer, you can use our HP 26A MICR equivalent. Contact us with your printer model number and we’ll confirm the right cartridge.
What is the difference between MICR encoder ribbons and MICR toner cartridges?
MICR encoder ribbons are used in dedicated check encoder machines (like NCR, Burroughs, or RDM) that imprint MICR characters during check processing — typically by banks and credit unions. MICR toner cartridges are used in standard laser printers that print full check documents on demand. Most businesses printing payroll or AP checks use MICR toner; banks processing inbound checks use encoder ribbons.
What other check printing supplies do you carry besides MICR cartridges?
We supply the full check-printing stack: MICR toner and ink cartridges, MICR encoder ribbons, MICR verifiers, check scanners, thermal transfer ribbons, printer maintenance kits, and cleaning supplies. We’re a single-source vendor for any business or financial institution running an in-house check operation.
How do I verify that my checks meet MICR banking standards?
You need a MICR verifier — a device that measures the magnetic signal strength of the MICR line on your printed checks. Tinta Industries supplies MICR verifiers that test compliance with banking standards. Regular quality checks should be performed on every print run to prevent bank rejections.
