Custom Apparel on Long Island: What Businesses, Schools, Camps, Hospitals and Churches Order

There is a difference between a shirt somebody is handed and a shirt somebody chooses to put on.

The first ends up in a box in a storage room. The second becomes the thing your team reaches for on a Saturday — which is when your logo does its real work, long after the event is over.

We produce custom apparel on Long Island from our studio in Garden City — embroidered polos, printed work shirts, spirit wear, camp tees, caps and outerwear — for organisations across Nassau County, Suffolk County and all five boroughs of New York City. Every one of them has a different answer to what that garment should be.

Here is how we think about each, and what we would ask you before quoting.

Small businesses & trades

A crew shirt is the cheapest advertising a local business owns. It arrives before you do, it sits in a driveway for three hours, and it tells a homeowner whether the people in their house are a company or two men in a van.

For contractors, landscapers, plumbers, electricians, cleaners and repair crews across Nassau and Suffolk, custom work shirts are the single piece of branding that gets seen most. A large back print carries the company name and phone number to the street; a front logo does the work at the door.

Usually: durable tees and long-sleeves, front logo with a large back print, high-visibility options for roadside crews, caps for sun.
Watch for: fabric that survives real work — a soft retail blank will not last a season of ladders and tools.

Corporate offices

Client-facing teams need something that looks deliberate across a desk. Embroidery rather than print — it reads as considered rather than promotional, and it survives the laundry a hundred times.

Most corporate apparel programmes we run are recurring rather than one-off: an embroidered polo and quarter-zip as the standing uniform, a new-hire kit for onboarding, and something warmer for conferences and off-sites. Set the artwork up once and every reorder is a same-day decision. Our corporate and business apparel page covers how those programmes are structured.

Usually: embroidered polos and quarter-zips, new-hire kits, conference and trade-show pieces, client gifts.
Watch for: sizing. Order one unisex cut and half the office quietly never wears it.

Schools & PTAs

Spirit wear has to clear two bars: a student will wear it in public, and a parent volunteer can manage the order without it becoming a second job. Bold mascot artwork on a hoodie does both.

We produce school spirit wear on Long Island for districts, PTAs, booster clubs, teams and graduating classes — hoodies, tees, staff polos and fundraiser runs. Where a PTA is selling to raise funds, the garment has to be good enough that families buy a second one.

Usually: spirit hoodies and tees, class-year pieces, staff polos, team and booster apparel, fundraiser runs.
Watch for: youth and adult sizing, and artwork prepared once so next year is a reorder rather than a rebuild.

Camps

A camp shirt does two jobs at once: it makes a hundred children identifiable on a trip, and it carries the sponsors who paid for the season. Colour matters more here than anywhere — counsellors need to find their group across a crowded field.

Summer programmes, day camps, sports clinics and youth organisations order camp t-shirts in group colours with staff in a contrasting shade, usually with a sponsor block on the back. Ordering the whole season in one run matters: dye lots shift, and a mid-July reorder rarely matches June exactly.

Usually: bright tees in group colours, contrasting staff shirts, caps for sun, drawstring bags.
Watch for: ordering the season in a single run, and leaving room in the count for late registrations.

Hospitals & healthcare

Healthcare branding is quiet by necessity. A small embroidered mark above the pocket identifies a department without turning a clinician into a billboard, and it has to still look correct after industrial laundering.

Hospitals, medical practices, dental groups, urgent care and home-health agencies order healthcare staff apparel where consistency is the whole point — one thread colour, one placement, so a patient reads the department rather than a collection of shirts. Warm layers matter for night staff, and event apparel for charity walks and community days is usually a separate run.

Usually: department polos and long-sleeves, embroidered warm layers for night shifts, event and walk apparel.
Watch for: consistency across departments, and a fabric rated for repeated hot-wash cycles.

Churches & congregations

Volunteer teams, youth groups, mission trips and choirs all need to be recognisable without looking corporate. Restraint reads better here than a large graphic — a small chest mark, a good colour, a garment people keep.

Congregations across Long Island order church volunteer shirts and youth group hoodies dated by year, so a trip or a season becomes something worth holding on to. You are dressing every age at once, which makes size range and a modest fit more important than the design itself.

Usually: greeter and volunteer shirts, youth group hoodies, mission-trip apparel dated by year, choir and event pieces.
Watch for: a wide size range from youth small to adult 3XL, and a fit that suits every generation in the room.

How the mark is applied

Three finishes, three reasons

Embroidery

The most considered finish, and the most durable. Right for polos, caps and outerwear — anything seen across a desk.

Fine text and photographic gradients cannot be rendered in thread.

Screen print

Softens into the cloth and grows cheaper per piece as the run grows. Beautiful on bold, few-colour artwork.

Setup is charged per colour, so it rewards volume and simplicity.

DTF

Full colour and photographic detail with no colour penalty, on runs as small as you like.

What makes a twenty-five piece order with complex artwork possible.

Getting to a quote

Five things to send us

The orders that run smoothly all begin the same way. None of this needs to be perfect — it just needs to exist before we start pricing.

01

Artwork that can be enlarged

Vector files — AI, EPS or PDF — reproduce cleanly at any size, which matters when the same logo goes on a cap and across the back of a hoodie. A logo pulled from a website will not survive being scaled up. If vector is all you have on an old business card, send that and we will look at redrawing it.

02

A real size run

Collect actual sizes from your team rather than estimating. This is the single most common reason apparel goes unworn, and it costs nothing to get right. Where the group is mixed, offer more than one cut — a shirt that fits is a shirt that gets worn.

03

The date you need them in hand

Not the date they ship — the date somebody has to be wearing them. Tell us if it is tied to a fixed event: a first day of camp, a grand opening, a golf outing, a graduation. Those dates do not move, and they change how we schedule the run.

04

How the garment will be used

A daily uniform, a one-day event piece, a client gift and a new-hire kit are four different briefs pointing at four different garments and four different finishes. Telling us the use is more useful than telling us the product — we will suggest the piece.

05

Whether you expect to reorder

If this becomes a standing programme rather than a one-off, say so at the start. It changes how we prepare the artwork and record the specification, so the second order is a short email rather than starting again. Most of our business is organisations on their fourth or fifth reorder.

Before you order

Questions we are asked

What is the best custom apparel for a company uniform?

For most Long Island businesses an embroidered polo is the strongest default: right for client-facing work, it holds up through repeated washing, and people wear it outside work. Field crews are better served by a durable printed work shirt, with outerwear added for anyone working outdoors through the winter.

Should we choose embroidery, screen printing or DTF?

Embroidery for polos, caps and outerwear, and anything seen up close. Screen printing for larger runs of bold, few-colour artwork. DTF printing for full-colour or photographic designs, and for smaller runs where screen setup would not be economical. Many programmes use more than one.

Is there a minimum order for custom shirts?

It depends on the decoration method rather than a blanket rule. DTF printing makes small runs practical, while screen printing becomes economical as the quantity rises because setup is charged per colour. Tell us the quantity you have in mind and we will tell you which method suits it.

What file do you need for our logo?

A vector file — AI, EPS or PDF — reproduces cleanly at any size and is what we would always prefer. If you only have a raster image, send the highest resolution version you have and we will tell you honestly whether it will hold up at the size you want, or redraw it.

Do you supply schools, camps, hospitals and churches as well as businesses?

Yes. Alongside corporate and small business work we produce school spirit wear and PTA fundraiser runs, camp and youth programme tees, healthcare staff apparel, and volunteer and youth group apparel for congregations across Long Island and New York City.

How much does custom apparel cost?

It depends on the garment, the decoration method, the number of colours and the quantity, which is why we quote per project rather than publish a price list. Send the garment, the quantity and your artwork and you will have a straight number back. You can see recent work on our custom apparel page.
